Leek 'Jolant' is a great crop to have waiting in the garden as the weather turns colder. This vigorous, reliable variety produces tall, dense white shanks with plenty to slice into warming soups, casseroles, pies and gratins.
The stems have an excellent mild flavour and tender texture, whether gently sautéed with butter, added to a favourite leek and potato soup or baked until soft and sweet.
Best of all, 'Jolant' stands well through winter, so there's no need to lift your whole crop at once. Leave mature leeks in the ground where conditions allow and simply harvest the biggest as you need them, giving the rest more time to grow.
